  21. I tried this once, some time ago, on a partition with minimal damage (my
  22. system rebooted during a file write, so I think the damage must have
  23. been localized to that one file & dir).  And indeed DiskSalv reported
  24. only one error, as I expected.

  26. DiskSalv nominally "restored" the drive, but in the process hopelessly
  27. damaged the rest of the filesystem layout.  It completely deleted my C
  28. directory, and screwed up a *bunch* of other stuff not related to the
  29. problem file.  I ended up just restoring from a backup.  (Luckily, you
  30. can still read a non-validated partition, so making an up-to-the-minute
  31. backup isn't a problem).

  33. If it had worked OK, I would have registered it, but I couldn't really
  34. justify it since my drive was worse off after I ran it.  Since, whenever
  35. I have a non-validatable partition I just restore it from a backup,
  36. which is actually much faster for me than running DiskSalv anyway.

  38. Anybody understand under what conditions a partition is non-validatable?
  39. When I have a crash during a file write, sometimes the partition
  40. validates OK, and sometimes it does not.  I've never seen much of a
  41. pattern in when it does and when it doesn't.
